A bumper week of new music this week as we head into the ever-cooler months, including the sophomore solo album from Belgian percussionist and vocalist Isolde Lasoen. The feature album this week on 2ser, Oh Dear is a masterclass in 70s styled euro-pop reinvention, and will appeal to fans of the likes of Laure Briard, Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg. Lasoen is a long-stranding drummer, but has recently focused on developing as a solo artist, and this is a magnificent record.
Well-loved Meanjin-based group Babaganouj formed over a decade ago, releasing intermittent singles and touring regularly, before taking an extended hiatus to focus on non-music related life matters. But they’re back baby!
Their debut album Jumbo Pets landed this week. Lead singles such as “What planet do you come from” and “Stay up for me” gave a taste for to expect, and this is a rich vein of guitar-pop par excellence that is filled with emotion and lived experiences that is at turns both beautifully tender and frenetic.
Further afield, the latest LP from A Certain Ratio is here. 1982 is the fifteenth studio album from the UK trio, who formed near Manchester in 1977 and played a critical role in the development of funk and electronic music there over subsequent decades.
It’s a fine record, with tight rhythmic funk and post-punk that draw in elements of afro-beat, electro, highlife and more. It really shines in parts, particularly via guest vocal appearances from Ellen Beth Abdi.
Also on your 2SER airwaves are some stellar new releases from local mysterions Zazas Mama, distinguised electronic artist Masahiro Takahashi, Ballarat’s finest dream-pop exponent Coda Chroma, Sydney post-punk champions Dick Dudley, killer Jazz-Funk from Indonesia’s Batavia Collective, beautiful synth-based indie from Memory Motel and Ainsley Farrell plus much much more. Check the list back at the top, or better yet, tune into your friendly local community radio station to hear it all.
