Family violence remains an overlooked risk factor in youth suicide according to new research.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that the statistics are alarming with 38 percent of deaths caused by suicide among young people aged between 15 to 24.

Following the latest report – a collaboration between Griffith University, Monash University and Melbourne City Mission and Berry Street Y-Change – that explores links between children growing up with family violence and youth suicide, experts are calling for a system overhaul where service needs of young victim-survivors of family violence are included.

The Wire’s Emma Wotzke speaks with co-author, Monash University’s Gender Family and Prevention Centre Director Professor Kate Fitz-Gibbon.
