It’s Wayne’s 4 by 2! 4 Reviews, 2 minutes each. Here’s what he had for us this morning.

Film: Saint Omer

The fist feature film from French documentary director Alice Diop is a blend of fact and fiction in this legal drama. Kayije Kagame stars as Rama, a pregnant novelists in attendance at the trial of Laurence Coly, played by Guslagie Malanda, who is accursed of murdering her baby in a recreation of the Myth of Medea.  Based on a real court case that Diop attended in 2016, Saint Omer sees Rama sympathize with Coly as their lives seem increasingly similar. Winning the Silver Lion Grand Jury prize at the 79th Venice International film festival last year, Saint Omer is intellectually stimulating and a deep exploration of the immigrant experience.

Saint Omer is in cinemas now. Watch the trailer here.

Television: Sherwood

This BBC crime drama follows the investigation into the death of a former trade union activist in a Nottinghamshire mining village. Based on the true stories of the UK miner’s strike in 1984-85 and murders occurring in Nottinghamshire in 2004, Sherwood is a sharp and incisive critique of family ties, community bonds and the unravelling of both in the aftermath of murder.

Sherwood is out now on Foxtel and Binge. Watch the trailer here.

Television: Am I Being Unreasonable?

This 6 episode British comedy stars Daisy May Cooper as Nic, a mother grieving a secret she cannot share with her family or anyone else. Stuck in a depressing marriage and without any real friends, her life is one of sadness and monotony. That is, until she meets Jen, played by Selin Hizli, another mum who moves into the area and seems to be the bright and happy friend that Nic needs in her life, but who carries a secret of her own. With brilliant comedic timing, thriller-like suspense and genuine moments of vulnerability, Am I Being Unreasonable? makes for a  solid watch of British comedy television.

Am I Being Unreasonable? is out now on SBS OnDemand. Watch the trailer here.

Album: More Photographs (A Continuum), Kevin Morby

A companion album to his successful This is a Photograph from 2022, More Photographs sees Morby releasing some songs that were left over from those original sessions, as well as some interesting reimagining of his previous tracks. “If This Is a Photograph is a house that you have been living inside of,” Morby said on his Bandcamp page, “then More Photographs is, perhaps, the same home just experienced differently. As if you, its inhabitant, have taken a tab of something psychedelic and now, suddenly, you’ve replaced your eyeglasses with kaleidoscopes.” Featuring 9 tracks in all, 6 of which are brand new songs and the other 3 reimagining’s of previous work, Morby continues to reinvent, perform and explore the different angles of life and music that grounds us and drives the story of our lives.

More Photographs (A Continuum) is out now on Spotify and Bandcamp.
