We have so much exciting new music this week and it begins with the 2SER Feature Album of the Week, “Everything is Alive” by UK indie-shoegaze icons Slowdive. This is their fifth album following the release of a few singles earlier this year such as “kisses” and “the slab” which feature the group’s ability to build rich psychedelic soundscapes intertwined with dreamy emotive lyricism. This record, mixed by Shawn Everrett who worked with the likes of SZA and The War On Drugs, sees Slowdive experiment with more futuristic shoegaze songwriting incorporating a fusion of organic and synthesized instrumentation like the lo-fi drums and vocals and moody distorted guitars on the single “skin in the game”. We are so excited to see the UK legends back putting out incredible music and we know you’ll love this LP as much as us!
Toro Y Moi has returned off the back of his recent studio album “Mahal” with his new EP “Sandhills”. The five-track release from the Oakland, California solo artist Chaz Bear is a sweet and tender folk-pop project, highlighted by his heavy reliance on the banjo and lap steel along with easy-rolling drums and washy acoustic guitars. Chaz pays tribute to his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina with lyrics about going to school and living with his family growing up, delivered in a beautiful heartbreaking style leaving anyone who listens with the adolescent blues.
Eora/Sydney-based home recording project Zazas Mama has released the first in a series of albums from their extensive back catalogue, by the name “Zazas Digest – Vol. I”. The masked local supergroup’s collection of lo-fi psych-rock and ambient tunes creates a fun and trippy soundtrack of kooky melodies and gentle and intimately affected vocals throughout. This will be a hit if you’re a fan of artists like Toro Y Moi, The Lazy Eyes and Mild High Club.
Staying in Australia, we have the sweet and soulful RnB EP “Interlude” from the collaborative project of Ena Malibu & Ta’sia. The pair combine the captivating and memorable vocals of Awabakal and Worimi-based Ena Malibu alongside the jazz, dub and lo-fi beats of producer Ta’sia, based out of North East Arnhemland, NT. Pulling sounds from old records, samplers and saxophone takes all recorded in tiny bedroom studios around Australia, this is an amazing release from two exciting emerging artists.
London producer Ash Walker has released his fourth album “Astronaut” via Night Time Stories. With features across every track, this texturally rich trip-hop and dub LP places a strong emphasis on downtempo drum grooves in the same style as artists like Massive Attack and is a fantastic cosmic chill-out record.
Philadelphia quartet Speedy Ortiz has announced their fourth studio album to be released through Wax Nine Records out of Pennsylvania, USA. The new LP, “Rabbit Rabbit”, is a raw indie rock project layered with thick and loud guitars and punchy drums. The group recorded the project in the desert landscapes of Joshua Tree’s Racho de la Luna and El Paso’ Sonic Ranch and is a great free-flowing rock album for fans of Wednesday or Soccer Mommy.
We also have some incredible new local singles from Misty Lanes with their washy psychedelic track “Here We Are” out via Third Eye Stimuli Records, as well as a soulful and groovy new single “Follow Thru” from Egyptian-Australian RnB artist Nardean.
