The blast from the past
Would humans be able to survive an asteroid smashing into earth? This is not the latest sci-fi blockbuster, but a small and real possibility. A 10 kilometre wide asteroid slammed into Mexico 65 million years ago – which is now widely believed to be the reason why dinosaurs became extinct. Since then, scientists have been monitoring asteroids and preparing should one ever hit Earth. We were joined by Michael Dello-Iacovo, resources and energy geophysicist and PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales.
