Get Away with Dre – Just hanging with the girls – Women’s Outdoor Activity Groups
To celebrate International Womens Day (IWD), we’ll look at some all-womens outdoor activity groups in NSW.
These gal groups focus on building the female community in outdoor activities, providing each other with a safe environment to explore their skills. When learning new skills in outdoor sports, women can take things in differently then our male counterparts, so building our skills with other women might be a comfortable way to do so. Sometimes, it’s just nice to share the outdoors with other like-minded women, and rip up the trails with them.
Below are some all-womens outdoor adventure groups around NSW. If you were thinking of trying something new, or already into an outdoor sport and you want to join an all-female community, hop onto Facebook Groups or search online. It’s great seeing more women crushing it in outdoor activities.
In the summer months at Thredbo, Thredbo turns into a seriously awesome mountain bike (mtb) park. The Gravity Girls is a clinic group presented by SRAM, designed to bring together the chicks that ride and want to progress their riding skills on gravity trails. What better place to do this than Thredbo with some of the best female instructors.
You’ll be surrounded by other women looking to progress, so it’s supportive, encouraging and also fun to ride with other women.
It’s grouped into 3 experience levels and focuses on the core techniques of mtb, and advanced riders will learn the fundamentals of jumps and drops.
They’re next ride is Sunday 17th March, and their last one is Sunday 21st April. It goes for 6 hours, 9-3pm and you need to book your spot because they take a max of 8 riders.
For the sheilas that like to stand up paddle board (S U P). This is a community group and all women are welcome on their SUPing meet-ups and adventures, but it’s also a social enterprise business. Profits from their trips, adventures, lessons and merchandise sales, fund their projects and initiatives that help women and young girls in more vulnerable circumstances access stand-up paddleboarding.
As well as holding lessons for women looking to build their skills paddling, they hold half-day paddles in Lane Cove, Hacking River, Woronora River, McCarrs Creek/ Pittwater, Sailors Bay, and the Northern Beaches – so you can join from anywhere across Sydney.
They also host multi-day trips around Australia. There’s a trip in Coffs Harbour, Canberra, the Gold Coast, Snowy Mountains, Mornington Peninsula, and New Zealand, to name a few.
For all the bouldering babes, or ones that would like to get into bouldering, the Nomad bouldering gym in Annandale hold a womens night on Thursday evenings from 7 – 9pm.
You’ll be guided by one of their female coaches, teaching you the fundamentals and technicality of the sport – all in a safe and supportive place that’s designed to connect and support women in the sport.

For the women that love backcountry skiing and exploring. The Women’s Beyond Boundaries group at Threbo is for you sisters!
This is presented by North Face, where an experienced backcountry female guide takes an all-female group into the best areas of the Australian Alps for backcountry skiing over a weekend.
You get to explore the Australian Main Range with a professional, alongside a passionate and supportive group of like-minded women, then get drinks after!
