Last night I was asked to put together a set of Trip Hop for a Bristol themed night of music. I always hated the word Trip Hop, much preferring to call it “Experimental Hip Hop” back when I was actively collecting those records in the early nineties. I don’t recall the term even existing until a few years later – so when people started calling these strange instrumental Hip Hop records that I had been buying Trip Hop the name sounded wack to me.Now I must admit I was coming to the sound more from being introduced to the most early Mo’Wax releases. I was yet to discover the brilliance of Smith & Mighty. I don’t recall Massive Attack having released any albums at that point. That was to come a year or two later. I say all that to emphasize that when I was playing these records back in the early 90s, it was mixed among more traditional Hip Hop, original Funk, Reggae, and Acid Jazz. I was never really doing complete sets of “Trip Hop” – well that was until last night. Many of these records have sat on the shelf for many years. They are not exactly my go-to party-rocking records. So when I had the opportunity to put a mix together for last night’s event it sounded like an exciting proposition to revisit this forgotten corner of my collection. Another admission: it felt right to expand the net a bit – and drop tunes that weren’t necessarily from the time, or even from Bristol.

So the mix on this show (a recreation of my set last night) definitely is anchored more around tunes inspired by the original “Trip Hop” sound, modernising it for modern sensibilities – and of course, done with my trade mark style of mixing. Needless to say, the set last night was a huge success as I fired rapidly through the songs. I’ve drawn the set out a little here on the radio show, extending it to reach closer to the show’s two-hour duration, and stuffed the ending with some other styles (and new releases) not even remotely related to Trip Hop, just because I can. I think it’s going to be an amazing listen. Let me know via the email address below. And a big thank you to the Ruffage crew for inviting me to their party and letting me do my thing. I had a blast. I hope you do to whilst listening to this show today.

Let me know you’re tuned in…

I love to know that you and your friends are listening to the show. Hit me up on the email with any shoutouts and requests. I might not always get to them through the program, but I’ll always do my best to mention you in the coming weeks.
