School Refusal
There has been a pressing issue affecting Australian students: school refusal. This problem has been increasing steadily over the past decade, with the stress of exams, mental health challenges, and various other factors increasingly impacting students’ ability to attend school. School refusal is a complex issue that involves a range of underlying causes, from anxiety and depression to bullying and neurodivergence. In this article, we explore the multifaceted nature of school refusal, examining the psychological, social, and educational factors that contribute to it. We also discuss potential solutions and policy changes, aimed at helping students overcome these barriers and ensuring they receive the education and support they need. We spoke with Associate Professor of Education at the University of Melbourne Lisa McKay-Brown regarding this topic.
