Women in Prisons: How Does Pop-culture Distort Our Views?

Throughout Australia, 64,977 people are currently incarcerated throughout the 77 operational prisons within Australia. Whilst imprisonment focuses on the rehabilitation of criminals, television shows such as Orange is the New Black and Wentworth have created a glamorized concept around women in prisons which has had an alarming effect with an increase in detainees. However, how accurate is this portrayal of prison life? 2SER was joined on the line by Elena Campbell, Manager, Policy and Research Centre for Innovative Justice at RMIT University to discuss how our perceptions of women in prisons have been tainted through pop-culture.
