Women’s injury prevention for the AFLW
As the Women’s AFL continues to grow, the stats and analytics are showing a significant increase in injuries.
The competition originally started in 2017 and nearly doubled its size by 2022 and once we get to 2026 they’ll be moving to a full 17 round comp with the women involved being professional and full-time athletes. The numbers show women are prone to more of some injuries but less of others compared to men. With most of the current injury prevention study and training being tailored to male players, it’s important that the female athletes receive the same to keep the athletes fit and healthy for the longer competitions.
To get the full rundown on what these differences are and what the future of female oriented injury prevention looks like we had exercise scientist and physiologist, Dr Joel Garrett, out of the School of Health Sciences and Social work, Griffith University, join us to explain.
