Exports up but Victoria out of gas
Woodside Energy has announced a new 10 year deal with Japanese company JERA for 6 shipments of LNG per year. JERA have also taken up a 15.1% interest in the Scarborough joint venture.
Whilst WA, NT and QLD have plenty of gas for export, Victoria’s own domestic supplies are running low. NSW is also in need of more gas, but there is no connection to the northern states that have the gas.
Both Federal and State Governments have equivocated for years over what to do – the Pilliga SANTOS project in NSW would do a lot to solve the crisis, if only a pipeline could connect it to the network. A lot of this gas would not even require simple water fracking. But it looks as though Victoria will have to bring in supplies by boat, and thus need to build a port.
