Burma on the Brink

The humanitarian crisis in Myanmar continues as fighting between military and opposition groups moves well beyond its third year, leading to millions of displaced people, and thousands of individuals unjustly detained and killed.

Following the 2021 coup, advisor to Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, Professor Sean Turnell would find himself incarcerated for nearly two years without charge by the military government.

Stephen Hill asked Dr Turnell about the current economic and social toll inflicted upon the Burmese people and whether the military dictatorship could in the near-term potentially collapse.

Dr Sean Turnell recently published Best Laid Plans: A Lowy Institute Paper: The Inside Story of Reform in Aung San Suu Kyi’s Myanmar which is available at all good bookstores.
