Pre-flight checks with Nubya Garcia

London-born saxophonist, bandleader and composer Nubya Garcia is redefining the boundaries of jazz music.

Since the release of her debut in 2017, Garcia has established herself as one of the most acclaimed and well-connected artists in the ecosystem of both British and world jazz. She’s collaborated with the likes of Mercury Prize-winning jazz quintet Ezra Collective and Belgium-based harpist Nala Sinephro, performed at some of the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals, and has held a monthly residency on NTS since 2017.

With the release of her sophomore album “Odyssey”, Garcia only re-affirms herself as a premier player and composer of her generation. From the outset of opening track “Dawn”, which features vocals from Esperanza Spalding, it’s clear that Garcia is embarking on a more expansive and formless journey than that of anything she has released before. The album is as stunning as it is disorientating.

To find out more, Trevor El Chino and Sasha Soh of 2SER’s Departure Lounge got Nubya on the line from London.

Nubya Garcia is about to embark on an Australian tour in support of “Odyssey”,  stopping through Oxford Art Factory on Thursday October  24
