The Work of Magritte — 100 years of Surrealism

The year, 2024, marks 100 years of Surrealism.

René Magritte’s iconic imagery of clouds, hats, pipes, and apples has played a crucial role in shaping the art of the movement.

The Art Gallery of NSW presents Magritte, Australia’s first major retrospective of the artist. This exhibition, part of the Sydney International Art Series, features over 100 works—many never before seen in the country. It showcases Magritte’s artistic evolution, beginning with his commercial art of the 1920s and expanding his critical contributions to surrealism in his later years, prior to his death in 1967.

Tai Spruyt, Assistant Curator of International Art at The Art Gallery of NSW, joins Danny Chifley on 2ser Breakfast to talk about this extraordinary showcase.
