Film: Green Border
Green Border (Zielona granica) (2023) is the newest film by Polish director Agnieszka Holland. This movie focuses on a Syrian family enticed by the apparent ease of crossing the Polish-Belarusian border and living a different life in the EU. The film gets its title from this particular type of border, a “green border”, that is weakly protected due to its dense forestry where people can usually move across undetected. From this event, the movie finds itself following four groups: 1. the family, 2. a Polish border worker, 3. Polish activists, and 4. a civilian who gets caught in the conflict and tries to help the refugees. Emphatically shot in black and white, this film is a serious and hard-hitting story that builds on Holland’s repertoire of political work.

Television: This Town
The BBC drama This Town (2024) is a 6-episode limited series written by Steven Knight of Peaky Blinders. Dante, a poet, and Gregory, a soldier, are brothers who share the dream of making music. Set in 1980s Coventry and Birmingham, the race riots loom over these characters and create obstacles to achieving their dream. This Town is a series that propels you into the music scene of the English 80s and tells the story of making music in an environment of political unrest.

Television: Nobody Wants This
Nobody Wants This (2024) is a trending Netflix original featuring Adam Brody and Kristen Bell. This romantic-comedy comes to life when agnostic Joanne (Bell) finds out that Noah (Brody) is a rabbi. The 10 half-hour episodes follow Joanne and Noah as they try to navigate a way of being together despite their differences, with a plethora of funny scenes where their two worlds collide. A great watch for a cozy weekend, and recently renewed for a second season!

Album: White Roses, My God by Alan Sparhawk
Since the disbandment of Low, his band of nearly thirty years, Alan Sparhawk emerges with his first solo album White Roses, My God. Sparhawk decided to release music under his own name after the passing of his wife and bandmate, Mimi Parker. From this tragedy, his typical indie rock style has developed to include ultra-experimental and electronic elements. It features many synthesisers and drum machines on top of your usual indie instruments, creating a sonic landscape filled with texture and layers.
