Christmas is around the corner and millions of Australians are looking to purchase gifts for their families and friends, with many turning to online shopping to avoid the last minute rush at the shops. However, this surge in online shopping may pose a threat to Aussie families with children.

A report released today from Slater and Gordon Lawyers highlights increasing concern over overseas manufacturers distributing toys and products to Australia that may be considered defective and dangerous. The report highlights the “increased usage of lithium batteries due to their light weight, higher energy storage and longer lifespan” often opted for by overseas manufacturers operating under limited production and safety testing standards indifferent to Australia. This is a cause for concern particularly among young children who may be exposed to fire and choking hazards.

Families online shopping for gifts in the lead-up to Christmas should be cautious of overseas products not regulated by Australian consumer authorities.
