Musical allrounder Russell Fitzgibbon has just released a hotly anticipated new album under his Skeleten alias. The followup to his acclaimed 2023 debut Under Utopia, Mentalized traverses similar territory, exploring the gentler and textured spaces of late night dance music. Dubby electronic overtones and lushly produced instrumentation perfectly match Fitzgibbon’s subtle lyrical presence as the songs ruminate on tensions personal and universal: late-capitalist estrangement, sexuality and intimacy. It’s a brilliant record and out now on Astral People.
An under the radar gem to catch up on (it released a few weeks ago) is the debut album from Naarm/Melbourne based visual designer and musician Fernandez. Echoing the likes of Portishead and Massive Attack, No Body is a haunting dose of dusty cinematic soul. Born and raised in London before relocating to Australia, Fernandez draws on musical traditions including Anglo-Indian and Portuguese combined with a family history in classical and choral. The album was written and recorded during the lockdown and also in between managing a young family, and was created with the assistance of Greg J Walker into a fine record that is well worth diving right into.
Also keep an ear out for some delicious modern boogie sounds from Eora-based outfit Monstress as well as the second single from Xavier Bacash’s new Now Always Fades project, baroque synth pop goodness on the new Tired Girl album and much more. Check the list above and thanks for tuning in to 2SER!
