Wayne Massingham is here to save you with his weekly recommendations in film, music, and television.
Television: The Sympathizer
A historical black comedy / drama miniseries based on the 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by American writer Viet Thanh Nguyen.
It’s based on the story of the Captain, a North Vietnamese spy serving in the South Vietnamese army, who then is forced to flee to the United States, where he struggles between his original loyalties and his new life.
The Sympathizer is available on Binge and Foxtel
Film: September 5
A gripping historical drama, set during the hostage crisis of the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics.
It follows an American sports broadcasting crew who had to quickly shift from sports reporting, to live coverage of the terrorist attack, and their intense and emotional experience of the incident.
September 5 is available in cinemas. Watch the trailer here.
Film: Companion
A sci-fi thriller where a weekend getaway turns bloody and violent when a subservient android that’s built for human companionship goes haywire. Darkly comedic, this movie keeps you guessing all the way through.
Companion is available in cinemas. Watch the trailer here.
