Remembering Dr G Yunupingu

This morning we received the sad news that Indigenous musician and ‘voice of a generation’ Dr G Yunupingu has died aged 46.
Dr Yunupingu was born on Elcho Island, a part of the Galiwin’ku community, and he first got interested in music and singing when he joined the Mission Choir there. He received his first guitar at the age of six, and learnt to play it upside down as he was left handed.
He went on to become the highest-selling Indigenous artist in history, selling more than half a million albums, and has performed for audiences including Barack Obama, Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark and Queen Elizabeth II.
Nic was joined by 2SER’s music director Andrew Khedoori to reflect on Yunupingu’s career and the legacy he’s left behind. “His style blended Australian Indigenous culture and folk and gospel in the most unique way,” Andrew said about Yunupingu’s 2008 debut album.
Dr G Yunupingu’s family has requested that his image not be published.
