The Courts Failing DV Survivors
The protection of domestic violence victims has come under scrutiny recently, prompting change to the Family Law Act. A recent case revealed a loophole that allowed the abuser of a wife and daughter to represent himself in court, and cross-examine his victims. The wife and daughter were faced with the reality of testifying and reliving their trauma and facing their abuser, or refusing to face their abuser in court, and allowing him to walk free.
The wife, Angela Hadchiti, and Labor MP Emma Husar have since started a campaign to change the law that allows this to happen – to protect victims of domestic violence and allow their abusers to face justice.
Matthew Knott, Political Reporter for the Sydney Morning Herald spoke to The Daily about why this is happening.
