The restorative art of freediving
Dr Michael Adams is an Associate Professor of Human Geography at the University of Wollongong and the winner of this year’s prestigious Calibre Essay Prize, presented by the Australian Book Review.
His essay “Salt Blood” describes the ancient practice of freediving or “breath-hold” diving, and how pursuing this path has revealed new ways of understanding loss and trauma in his life, in particular the death of his father. For Michael, freediving has been a transformative, liberating experience, allowing him to connect profoundly with nature and reflect on the beauty, fragility and inevitability of life and death.
