What is the Splinternet?
The internet is becoming an increasingly fragmented world. The so-called Splinternet is being created by continual pressure from governments and communities to control just what we see online.
China is often cited as the classic example of a closed country-specific Internet but giant media platforms such as Facebook and Google have always had to work within the confines of local laws in various countries. Controls such as geo-blocking — something very familiar to Australia — are often used to change our internet experience, limiting just how much we can access.
Terry Flew, Professor of Media and Communications from the Queensland University of Technology chatted to Nic about whether the “global” experience of the internet is actually a myth.
