Media Reform Deals Passes the Senate
Wednesday saw a breakthrough in the Government’s negotiations with the Senate’s crossbenchers in their attempts to repeal cross-media diversity rules. The Broadcasting Legislation Amendment Bill 2017, needed 38 votes to pass the Senate, 29 of which the Coalition controls. After negotiations, the support of three crossbenchers and four One Nation senators was secured and Nick Xenophon and the NXT’s party support was the final deal to push the bill through the Senate yesterday. So if this bill passes through the House of Representatives, how will it affect media diversity? To discuss this The Daily was joined by Dennis Muller, a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Advancing Journalism at the University of Melbourne.
