A new hope for the The Great Barrier Reef: Genetically Modified Corals
As we most of the world is aware nearly Two-thirds of the corals in the northern part of the Great Barrier Reef have died in the reef’s worst-ever bleaching event. Recently Scientists have found a solution to help grow healthier coral and hopefully revitalise the Great Barrier Reef. Scientists have been finding a way to develop genetically modified heat resistant coral could be the answers for saving the reef. This 5 year “Sea-quence” project was headed by Great Barrier Reef Foundation who worked on decoding the complex DNA code of nine different coral species to find a possible solution. The Daily was joined by the Program Manager at the Great Barrier Reef Foundation Dr Petra Lundgren to talk about the promising breakthrough.
