Dictionary of Sydney: 25 years since the Redfern Speech
Paul Keating’s 1992 address to launch the United Nations international year of the world’s indigenous peoples turned into one to the most momentous speeches in Australian history. The Redfern Address was the first time the Australian Government publicly acknowledged the dispossession of our first Australians. In his speech Keating mentions the need to reinterpret the past, a statement which still rings true a quarter of century later.
