Dictionary of Sydney: Mardi Gras
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Sydney’s famous Mardi Gras parade. This Mardi Gras is set to be one of the most exciting years yet, with same sex marriage passed just a few months ago and huge celebrity guest Cher headlining the event.
Also adding to the mix of this year’s Mardi Gras is the updated Sydney Culture Walks app
That provides an interactive experience over 21 stops up oxford street highlighting Sydney’s LGBTQI’s history.
However, Mardi Gras has not always been this enticing and exciting event that we have come to know and love–our history has a dark past in terms of Mardi Gras with discrimination, deaths and arrests at the forefront of its history. Nicole Cama from the Dictionary of Sydney joined us here at 2Ser to dig a little deeper into this history.
