A Place for Para-Sports in the Commonwealth Games

If you’ve been watching the Commonwealth Games, one thing you may have noticed – apart from Australia’s domination in the swimming – is the number of para-sports being televised. In the spirit of inclusivity, the Commonwealth Games have been making any effort to both expand the number of para-sports being competed in this year and to televise disabled athletes right alongside able-bodied athletes.

But issues about inaccessibility getting to and moving around the grounds are stark reminders that once the events are over, people with disabilities go back to lives where they are often excluded from mainstream society.

The Daily‘s Sam Baran spoke to Dr Simon Darcy, Professor at the UTS Business School, about the Commonwealth Games’ integration of para-sports into the main event.

You can find Dr Darcy’s writing on the subject here at The Conversation.
