Detailed Milky Way Star Chart
The European Space Agency has published the most detailed star chart yet of the Milky Way, from data collected by the GAIA satellite. Hundreds of scientists and software engineers have spent years observing, processing the data and creating a catalogue of stars, from which they have been able to generate detailed maps covering almost 1.7 billion stars. What new insights have we gained from this new release, and what can we expect next? The Daily was joined on the line by Sarah Martell, Lead Project Scientist on the GALAH survey and Senior Astrophysics Lecturer from UNSW.
