Who can say what is “Cultural Appropriation” and what isn’t?
An online debate has been sparked by a teenager’s decision to wear a traditional Chinese dress to her prom. Many have criticised her choice to ‘appropriate’ another culture’s fashion without having respect or knowledge for the historical significance of the dress. Chatting to us now about why this has caused so much online debate was Anthony Lambert, senior lecture of media and culture at Macquarie University.
