Extinct craters and rocky reefs found off Wollongong coast

Up and down the New South Wales coast, there’s currently a major scientific project underway called “Seabed NSW”.  The project is using digital mapping technologies to gain a better understanding of the complex underwater ecosystems and structures beneath the waves.

Scientists from the Office of Environment and Heritage and several local Universities are now making some remarkable discoveries.

Recently, just off the coast of Wollongong, the Seabed team were surprised to find a wonderland of extinct volcano craters, ancient river beds and rocky reefs teeming with fish, colourful sponges and kelp forests.

Scientist Dr Tim Ingleton from the Office of the Environment and Heritage joined Tess to chat about the Seabed project and the hidden treasures of the deep.
