For the past few years iconic film expert and critic, David Stratton, has chosen a timeless director to feature in a retrospective collection for Sydney Film Festival. Previously, we’ve seen works from quintessential directors Martin Scorsese, Akira Kurosawa and more.

This year, Stratton shines a light on the work of Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki, known for his use of deadpan and his undeniable love of lovable dogs.

Sophie spoke with David Stratton about the films selected for the retrospective and the universality of Kaurismaki’s films.
