Dictionary of Sydney: Why Police Started Carrying Guns in Sydney

The police of the City of Sydney haven’t always carried firearms.

The decision was made in 1894 after the “Bridge Street Affray”, a rather bizarre robbery attempt that ended with two criminals fleeing right past a police station, and then threatening to shoot a police man.

The ensuring moral panic resulted in the state government of the day bending to the popular demand of arming our police – but not without a lot of weirdness along the way.
