Uber ‘Panic Button’: Is It Enough?

Uber has developed a ‘panic button’ feature that allows passengers who feel threatened by their driver to alert emergency services at the swipe of a button. With sexual harassment and assault long-held concerns for passengers, the introduction of the feature demonstrates Uber’s attempt to improve consumer safety and ride experiences. However, the feature is currently only available in America, with plans for its implementation in Australia in talks. In light of a string of past sexual harassment allegations against Uber drivers, many are questioning whether the popular ridesharing service is doing enough to ensure the safety of their consumers. Dr Lauren Rosewarne, senior lecturer in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne, joined us on the line to discuss.
