Cancelling Roseanne

Last week, after its leading star publicly made racist remarks about an Obama-era official, ABC decided to cancel its hit show Roseanne. Once a bulwark of working-class American life in mainstream media, its star Roseanne Barr had in recent years become the cliche of a right-wing conspiracy theorist.

But ABC’s decision to scrap Roseanne raises questions about about our relationship to art in the social media age: how do we separate art and the artist? And do we lose something by excluding art made by problematic individuals?
