Romance and Roses: Is it “Real”?

Australian audiences are constantly moving through phases of reality television. From social experiment shows like Big Brother, to cooking shows like MasterChef, and renovation shows like The Block, we are always drawn to something new. Right now, audiences seem to be fascinated with reality dating shows, such as Married at First Sight, The Bachelor and more recently Love Island. Earlier this year, the grand finale of Married at First sight drew in a massive 1.75 million viewers. But what is the impact of such shows? Why are we so obsessed with who gets the final rose? How might these shows be shaping our understanding of relationships today? Dr. Lauren Rosewarne, senior lecturer in the school of social and political sciences at the University of Melbourne, talked with Drive to discuss further.
