What the Faux? More Than Just Queens in the Drag Scene

Through wigs, fake eyelashes and costumes galore, the world of Drag has boomed in the last ten years. From Dame Edna to Ru Paul, famous Drag Queens around the world are becoming household names. But how inclusive is the glitz and glam of Drag? Well, one ‘faux queen’ in Tasmania is defying expectations of audiences and other performers in the scene. ‘Kat Daddi’ is the first ‘faux queen’ to be contracted to a club in Tasmania and is helping to path the way for many more Bio Drag performers in Australia. But is there room in the Drag scene for more than traditional Queens and Kings? Some are claiming that it isn’t really drag unless you are performing a different gender.

Dr Kerryn Drysdale from the Centre for Social Research in Health at UNSW joined us this morning to talk about how inclusive the scene is.
