Australia’s coal alternative: uranium and nuclear energy
When hearing the word ‘nuclear’, most people think about radiation, weapons of mass destruction, and the Chernobyl incident; but what if we could add ‘energy’ into the mix? Despite having almost a third of the world’s uranium resources, Australia doesn’t use nuclear power, and with the coal market dwindling, uranium could take its place as a 0-carbon emission alternative.
The Daily spoke to Director of the Australian National University’s Energy Change Institute, Professor Kenneth Baldwin, about the potential for a nuclear energy industry in Australia, and the environmental risks associated with nuclear power.
