New ultrasound guidelines give more certainty
‘Watch and wait’ is generally the advice given to women who are experiencing symptoms of a miscarriage—but further research into when best to diagnose a miscarriage may provide greater certainty in the diagnosis.
The guidelines for diagnosing a miscarriage, based on the size of he embryo and the gestational sac were changed in 2011, as it was believed the previous recommendations were leading to misdiagnosis.
A study from the United Kingdom has confirmed that the guidelines are safe, and has added further recommendations of when follow up ultrasounds should occur.
