Why We Need Arts Critics

Earlier this month Fairfax Media announced a plan to cut 125 editorial jobs in order to ‘create a sustainable newsroom for the future’. Many of the job cuts include arts writers and editors which means Fairfax’s coverage of the arts will take a hit. Although they may not always like what is written about them, Australian actors, comedians, writers and artists have expressed support for arts journalists and critics. The Daily spoke with Strategic Professor of Creative Arts at Flinders University, Dr. Julian Meyrick and discussed the interdependent relationship between the arts and arts journalists.
