Why has The Bower Been Locked Out of its Marrickville Home?

If you’ve spent much time in Sydney’s Inner West or shopped at the Marrickville markets, you’re probably familiar with the Bower Reuse and Repair Centre.  The not-for-profit has been operating out of a straw-bale building in the Addison Road Community Centre for twenty years, saving tonnes of household goods from landfill and offering locals a cheap option to furnish their homes.

But yesterday morning, Bower staff turned up to find the locks changed and an eviction notice pinned to their door. With The Bower’s future now in jeopardy, Tess had a chat with their General Manager Guido Verbist about the drama and the uncertain future of the popular recycling and repair centre.  Over 8000 people have already signed a petition to reverse the eviction.
