The Aftermath of the Thailand Cave Rescue

International focus has shifted this week as we reacted to the gritty details of the Thailand Cave Rescue carried out last year, in which twelve young boys were carried to safety in a life or death situation. The official stance was that the boys (one of them as young as 11), were being trained how to dive and swim through the obstacle course of the caves between themselves and freedom. This was not entirely accurate, the procedure required extended periods of expert navigation and to reduce the risk each boy was given strong anaesthetics and tied to the divers who had come to rescue them. This is all detailed in ‘The Cave’, a novel written by ABC correspondent in Thailand, Liam Cochrane, who came on air with us to discuss the matter.
