The Thread is a show which links one song to the next somehow, through some common thread or theme.
This week’s thread is best described as whiskey and wine, with a bit of green tea thrown in for good measure.
It starts with Supergrass (from Oxford, UK) before moving over to Texas for Hayes Carll, then stays in the US for the divine voices of Laura Cantrell and Dawn Landes, then returning to Australia for Melbourne’s The Killjoys (speaking of divine voices!). Then off to Tami Neilson (a Canadian living in New Zealand – another amazing voice!), then into Whiskey Straight Love by another Texan – Josh T Pearson (from his album The Straight Hits! All songs feature ‘Straight’ in the title and this one features ‘Whiskey’).
Then off to South Carolina for Susto’s Cigarettes, Whiskey and Wine and to Alabama’s Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit’s Cigarettes and Wine. On to Elvis Costello.
Back to Australia – Perth’s Methyl Ethel. Back to the UK for Duke Garwood. Back to Australia for a pub rock anthem – Cheap Wine.
Staying in Australia for Brendan Gallagher’s Wine Island and then The Jackson Code covering Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra’s classic, Summer Wine.
In Melbourne for Summer Flake, off to Perth-raised, Nashville-based Ruby Boots.
And then to Canada’s The New Pornographers, with Neko Case on lead vocal.
Back to Texas for Robert Ellis.
And then back to Canada for Ron Sexsmith. Our frequent flyer points would be good by now!
Multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird features, and he is followed by Brisbane’s own Robert Forster and then Perth’s Tame Impala before Melbourne’s Raised By Eagles.
The final straight is Ben Folds Five, The Replacements and finally, The National.
