Melbourne horse racing figure Darren Weir had an ugly wakeup call this week when Victorian Police raided a number of his stables under suspicion of illegal activities. They allegedly came away with a number of ‘jiggers’, a kind of electroshock device, an unregistered gun and what officers believed to be cocaine. Without ascribing any sort of guilt in this particular case, does the racing industry have a wider issue with these devices? What are they for and what other issues could be plaguing the industry?
