Should women be responsible for ‘staying safe’ in the wake of violent crimes?
Don’t walk alone at night, and if you do have your keys between your knuckles; text a friend when you arrive home safely; keep an eye on your drinks; don’t have headphones in; don’t dress too “provocatively”…
Sound familiar? These are just among a few safety or “preventative measures” that many women will have heard at at least one point in their lives… but just how effective are these strategies in preventing violent crimes against women, and should we perhaps be shifting our focus and placing the onus on something, or someone else? The Daily’s Victor Petrovic is joined by Dr. Bianca Fileborn, lecturer in criminology at UNSW to shed some light on this issue.
