Privacy versus security
The case of Theo Hayez, the Belgium backpacker who went missing in Byron Bay in May 2019 has raised questions around mobile phones, the data on them and who can access it extenuating circumstances.
Hayez was using WhatsApp the night he went missing. After pleas from Hayez’s family and Australian authorities, WhatsApp is working with the authorities to help with the investigation.
Dr Robert Merkel, Lecturer in Cyber Security and Systems from Monash University, joined us today to talk about technology behind instant messaging services and what data is and isn’t possible to be extracted from our phones.
