1 in 5 Australians Victims of Image-Based Abuse

Research by the eSafety office revealed that one in five Australians have experienced intimate images or videos of themselves shared without their permission. These incidents, also known as revenge porn, are a growing concern as shocking statistics revealed that more than one third of cases victims were under the age of 18 and 79% of all cases were women. In 2018 new laws brought in tougher punishments for people who share revenge porn, which could see them spend up to seven years in prison. Recently in the US, a bill was signed into law criminalizing the spread of non-consensual pornography, making New York the forty-sixth state to implement such protections for its residents.

What more do we need to be doing? To talk about this, we were joined by Dr. Nicola Henry from RMIT.
