For over a decade, Africa Express has been championing the talent coming out the world’s second largest continent. Co-founded and driven by Damon Albarn, the rotating collective has facilitated songwriting camps and cross-cultural collaboration between African artists and other artists from all different backgrounds, genres and generations. For its latest instalment/album ‘Egoli’, the collaboration takes place in its affectionate Zulu namesake, Johannesburg. The draw card collaborators are Damon Albarn, Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Gruff Rhys, and Mr Jukes, but stay for the magnetic beats orchestrated by Capetown producer Sibot, and powerhouse vocal performances from the Mahotella Queens, and Otim Alpha.

Closer to home, by way of Brisbane, is Dana Gehrman with her latest ‘Find A Way’. These are brightly lit songs leaning heavily into Americana and Stax era, Southern Soul for a grittiness and unbridled bite that’s delivered by Dana’s front and centred vocals. She’s supported by a beaming brass section, Hammond organ, 12 string guitar and pedal steel, with Tim Rogers and The Wilson Pickers’ Danny Widdicombe featuring, too.

And Melbourne based singer-songwriter, Angie McMahon releases her debut album ‘Salt’ which is a beguiling mix of beautifully unhurried, folk, and staunch, anthemic rock numbers. These are songs full of emotions rendered intimate, and honing in on some deeply personal tumult, but without ever being cloying. Those in Sydney can catch her album launch on Friday, October 4 at City Recital Hall.
