This week, Californian garage, psych-rocker Ty Segall returns with something quite unexpected on his new album ‘First Taste’. Working outside comfort zones, the otherwise guitar fuzz aficionado ditched the 6-string and instead opted for the mandolin, Greek bouzouki, and Japanese koto. Percussion, synths, brass, and saxophone are aplenty too, and Segall reaches a new kind and nicely balanced harmony with his vocals standing front and centre.

It’s safe to say that the UK, and specifically London, is having quite the moment with jazz, and one of the key groups spearheading this is septet, Nérija. ‘Blume’ is the group’s watertight debut, grounded by the musicians’ deep understanding of the distinct styles they’re referencing. Tracks like “Riverfest” best showcase the fluid harmonies the band is oh-so good at, a flowing mix of saxophones, trumpets and horns.

And there’s also Dublin-now-Sydney musician, Bonnie Stewart, better known as Bonniesongs. Stewart’s debut album ‘Energetic Mind’ is a dreamy tapestry of folk with elements of 90s grunge and doom. Its drawn comparisons to early Cat Power, but there’s also the transcendental surrealism of Joanna Newsom carefully weaved through, too.
