Whose Following Our Digital Footprints?

We live in a digital world and a big part of this is interacting in online spaces. Every time we Google something or log on to a social media platform, algorithms are fast at work recording and responding to what we do to make our online experience more convenient. Our online habits and digital footprints are turned into data. But what happens to these vast amounts of information? Should we be concerned about who we are trusting with it? What does a biased algorithm mean? 

We spoke with Professor Kate Smith-Miles, from the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne, about the ethical considerations of algorithms and how information is generated and collected online.
