A Meta crisis for Australian journalism?
The company that owns Facebook and Instagram has said it will not renew commercial agreements with Australia’s major news organisations, and smaller publishers. It has outlets concerned about what the loss of these contracts’ worth tens of millions of dollars might mean for newsrooms and journalist jobs. As Matthew Ward Agius reports, the government does have the tools to force companies to pay, but it’s not yet clear whether this is the best way forward.
